Excellence Wales Awards 2010

Police Authorities of Wales received an Excellence Wales Award 1st October 2010, under the heading ‘Collaborative Projects’ and in recognition of its excellent governance structures for the Welsh collaborative policing programme.

Police Authorities of Wales (PAW) and the police forces recognised there was a need for a body to take joint accountability for the delivery of collaborative programmes, governance and decision making. In July 2007 a statutory Joint Committee for policing in Wales was signed by the four Police Authorities in Wales.

A number of all Wales collaborative units were established to deliver cross border policing projects to the communities of Wales. To support the joint vision and confirm the commitment, the first National Policing Plan for Wales was published in March 2008, setting out the strategic priorities for police collaboration. This provided a very visible PAW commitment to providing an improved policing service to Welsh communities. The innovative partnership working with transparent accountability ensures policing in Wales retains sustainable improvement in a financially demanding landscape.

Excellence Wales is a biennial award scheme recognising, celebrating and sharing leading practice in local services and all applicants undergo a rigorous assessment with a wide range of criteria. Excellence Wales is run by the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) and is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG).
